A lady that I know from Bible camp gave birth to a son, Jonah Alexander, on Friday. Jonah was born with a skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa. It is a very rare skin disorder that affects the skin, mucous membranes, and intestines and can be very serious. Jonah is in Brenner Children's Hospital. You can keep up with how he is doing here. Patrice gave birth to another little boy, Gabriel, in April of 2008 who was stillborn. The doctors think he probably had the same condition. There is also a group created on Facebook for this family that you can join if you on Facebook.
I'm praying for you Matt, Patrice, and Jonah!

So, how's it going?
Today marks the end of my first 2 weeks at my new job. I am still training with another dietitian so that I am not just thrown to the wolves! That is nice. The lady training me is very good at showing me everything and getting what I am going to be needing. I think I will at least be training with her until at least through the end of next week. Today I finally got keys. Next week, I should get to move into my office. I will have to post some pictures of it while it is neat!!
I do think that I am going to be okay with this new job. I've been very nervous about the change but my other position has been filled now, so now I am going to have to move on!
I am still going to be working with veterans in long term care. Like any new job, this one is the same in some things and different in some others. For one, there are electronic charts and I am going to love that.

Not seeing so well...
Most of you know that I have worn glasses for most of my life. I got glasses when I was in the 4th grade. I remember getting them but I don't remember what a difference they made in my vision. My near-sightedness has continued to get worse throughout my life. The doctors tell me that eventually they will not keep changing, but so far they haven't stopped.
I inherited my vision from my father, I think...his eyes are pretty bad, but not nearly as bad as mine. My brother also wore glasses, but his eyes were never nearly as bad as mine.
Brent got glasses about 5 years ago. Several of my cousin's children (on my mom's side) also have glasses for near-sightedness.
Why am I telling you this? Because despite all of the above, I was actually surprised when the school nurse referred Nolan to the eye doctor. I knew that there was a chance that one or both of my children will need glasses, but I guess I just didn't want to believe it. Nolan is an excellent student and reader, so I assumed that all was well with his vision.
We took him to the eye doctor (it was such a hard decision choosing between Bonnie and Bobby!) and Brent and I both accompanied him. We both thought that he was not wanting to participate in the eye exam when he said that he couldn't read the letters. Then, when the prescription was put in front of him, it quickly became clear that he wasn't kidding, he really couldn't see them.
So, now Nolan has joined the others in our family with glasses. They are very cute glasses...gold colored wire rimmed frames made by Nike. He was a little apprehensive to put them on, but when he did he looked out the window and said, "Now I can see that the tree has branches!" Later, when watching TV, he said, "Now I can see the characters!" Wow!!
He is doing well with his glasses and he looks very good in them. I will post pictures later.

Taking care of a sick child...
Nolan began feeling bad on Tuesday afternoon. He has been running a fever and not feeling good at all. On Tuesday night, he said to me, "You need to take me to the doctor, I think I have strep throat." I, being the intelligent mother that I am replied "We'll see" while I was thinking..."it's probably just a virus...we don't need to go to the doctor." Yesterday Nolan was still feeling awful and my friend who is a nurse took one look at his tongue and said, "It looks like strep." My mom said that her boss, another nurse, said that the symptoms sounded just like a textbook case of strep.
We go to the doctor yesterday afternoon...they take a strep test and guess what? He was right all along...he has strep throat. He had strep throat last winter and I guess that he knew that he felt that bad again.
Why don't I listen to my smart little boy who is growing up so fast right before my eyes???

February Supper Menu
** So far this month's plan is just not working so well. We keep changing things around. Next month I think I will come up with the meals but not set dates for each one. That way there is room for flexibility. For example, last night I was prepared to make pork chops but Brent was in the mood for the salmon patties so I changed that around. Saturday and Sunday we ended up eating elsewhere, so those meals weren't done. Well, it is a work in progress, I guess. The good news is that I've saved money on food this month when compared to last month by 27% if we don't go over our eating out budget! The red text below is what I've already changed for the monthly menu and it's only the 11th!
Original post: Here's the meal plan for this month: I'm sure things will get changed around and I probably won't make every one of these by end of February but it's the plan! Brent and I are trying to lose some weight by eating healthier and exercising more. We are going to be packing our lunches now so it sounds like we are going to have some yummy leftovers!! I also want to fit taco soup and chicken pie in there sometime...hmmm. I am thinking of copying my friend Mindy and creating a blog to put recipes on. Would anyone be interested? If no one is going to look at it but me then I'm not going to take the time to do it, but if I think someone else might care, then I will do it. What is your opinion?
Feb 5 - baked ziti, toast, salad
Feb 6 - chicken soft tacos
Feb 7 - nathan and Erin's
Feb 8 - supper at Joe's
Feb 9 - salmon patties, cous cous, green peas
Feb 11 - pork chops, rice, green beans
Feb 12 - lasagna, salad, rolls
Feb 13 - taco bake, green beans, corn
Feb 14 lunch - chicken cheese quesadillas, salad
Feb 15 - quiche, sausage, biscuits
Feb 16 - cheesy chicken spaghetti, carrots
Feb 17 - pork chops with gravy, mashed potatoes, cream corn
Feb 19 - white chicken chili, cornbread
Feb 20 - potato and beef pie, squash
Feb 21 - stir- fry, rice
Feb 23 - chicken and dumplings, peas and carrots
Feb 24 - pork tenderloin, cous cous, green beans
Feb 25 - chili mac, cornbread, salad
Feb 27 - leftovers
Feb 28 - pancakes, eggs, sausage
still needs to be added somewhere: salmon, rice, peas

Starting something new...
Next week I will be starting a new job. While it is not very "new" in a lot of ways, I am still very nervous about the change. It is not very "new" because 1 - it is just across the parking lot from where I have been working, 2 - it is still working with the same population, 3 - my job description is going to be very similar to my current one. I am nervous because working at my current location has been a good experience that I am sad to leave. What if I do not like the new job? What if I give up a perfectly good job and then can't get it back? It's a chance that I am going to take...
Actually I am not usually so fearful of change. This is the first time in my life that I actually remember making a decision and then actually "looking back". I have been praying for God to lead me in the direction that He wants me to go. I feel that we need to listen for God's urgings daily and not just in the "big" decisions. I am taking his leadings day by day and trying and praying to live in his will. In making this decision, I have already learning something. I have learned that no matter what choice you are trying to make, there are going to be people that give you advice and opinions that lean both ways. In the end YOU are the only one that can make the choice.
